Where It All Began
A quick history of GRG Adventure Kayaking and where it all began for Maila, the man behind the company.
Kayaking was always in Mailas future. Growing up alongside the Trisuli river in Nepal, everyone guessed what Maila’s future was to hold. Before he had even turned 8, he showed promise of things to come and he was a natural. Learning from his older brothers who always gave him the opportunity to raft and kayak. Maila quickly grew to love the river and become a great kayaker.
The Early Days
After working as a safety kayaker and raft guide for 20 years, Maila had all the skills you could want in a river guide. He has worked & paddled in Nepal, India, England, USA and Switzerland as an outdoor guide. He dreamt of owning his own company and to create more jobs for Nepali’s and offer better training and support in the Nepali whitewater industry.
Having won the Nepal National Kayak Championships many times …who better to take you out on the Nepali rivers!
The Start of GRG
So in 2009 Maila did just that! He set up GRG Adventure Kayaking. The ultimate aim of establishing GRG was to break the mold of run of the mill “herd them in herd them out” tour operators and bring a new element to travel in Nepal. We wanted to offer a fun, safe, eco-friendly trip.
GRG stands for Gurung River Guides and you won’t find any other company that is as professional and has as much experience coaching and guiding and is as dedicated to Nepal than us.
Maila has his raft guide qualifications, is NARA licensed, WRT (Whitewater Rescue Technician), SRT (Swift Water Rescue), Grade IV/V Trip Leader from the IRF, CPR/First Aid qualified and British Canoe trained. Maila has recently worked as guest coach for the World Class Academy.
GRG is a small, professional, award winning, local Nepali run company passionate about adventure which means we can give you more time and a more personal, hands on experience. We have lived in Nepal all our lives so we know the best parts to show you and have the kind of knowledge that cannot be found in a guidebook.
‘It’s not just about getting there, it’s the journey that takes you there’.
Present Day
15 years on and GRG Adventure Kayaking has gone from strength to strength. We have had a couple of stumbling blocks along the way. From earthquakes to Covid where Nepal was closed for a period of time. However GRG has grown and now has Gurung Valley, a riverside camp on the Trisuli River.
