Visa and Entry Into Nepal
The visa application system has changed over the years and for those who have not been to Nepal before or for those that have not been since Covid the way you apply for a via has changed. To make it a little easier for you we have tried to explain the two main ways to get a visa.
Passport Validity Requirements
To avoid problems at immigration, make sure your passport has an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after your date of entry into Nepal.
Visa Requirements
You can get a Nepal visa application online up to 15 days in advance of your arrival. Do not apply for a visa earlier than 15 days from your departure as you will have to apply again.
The Nepal Immigration Website is the only site you should use for applying for a visa. This can be found here.
Nepal offers Visa On Arrival for many foreign nationals. If this applies to you, that means you can go to Nepal without anything but your passport. However the process upon arrival will take longer.
Online Visa Application – Before Departure
Make sure you print out the application form and bring it with you ready for when you arrive at Kathmandu airport.
Once you arrive at Kathmandu airport you can go straight to the visa payment desk in the left-hand corner. All you need is your printed out visa application form, your passport and the fee. See below for the fee’s, payment must be made in cash, with US dollars being the preferred currency. They will give you a receipt for your payment, keep hold of this you will need it at immigration.
The old landing cards are no longer required.
You will then need to head to the immigration desks on your right. You will need your passport and receipt of visa payment, your photo is taken and your visa issued. You can then proceed towards the baggage reclaim.
Visa On Arrival
If you have not applied for a visa before arriving in Nepal you will have to queue up 3 times. First you have to stand in line to get to a machine that reads your passport and prints your application based on it. Second, you have to stand in line at a bank counter to pay the visa fee. Then, you stand in line a third time at the immigration, where you actually get the visa granted.
Applying in advance can reduce the time it takes you to pass through immigration.
Visas are available for several lengths of stay at various costs. These are as follows at the time of writing this blog.
15 Days – USD 30
30 Days – USD 50
90 Days – USD 125
Visa Extension
You can extend your visa when in Nepal at a cost of USD 3 per day (Minimum 15 days).
